I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone, and I’m so not ready to let them go.

To end the year, we do something fun and assign each of the last 26 days a letter. I plan 3 small group activities for each letter. One is a math, one is a language arts, and the last one is a fun art activity.

Here is the beginning of our alphabet countdown to the last days of kindergarten.

A is for Angry Birds

My kindergartners are obsessed with Angry Birds. In fact, as the “publisher” of their journal books. I finally had to say no more books about Angry Birds! Find something else to write about!

I decided to start out the countdown with A is for Angry Birds. They were so excited.

B is for Beary Blue

On B day, we all wore blue, made beary blue hats, did a listening center with the Berenstein Bears and made symmetrical butterflies from a Lakeshore kit a parent donated. Love how well they are beginning to understand symmetrical!

Grassman

Our book unit last week was Grow Flower Grow by Lisa Bruce

We made these super cute grass heads. I put them in my “geometry” small group activity….a bit of a stretch, but I wanted them to cut the foam into shapes to make a face, so that kind of works.

My other favorite activity of the week was the “Dandelion Wish” writing activity.

Chalkboard Paint in Kindergarten http://ilovekindergarten.com/blog/2012/03/23/chalkboard-paint-in-kindergarten/ http://ilovekindergarten.com/blog/2012/03/23/chalkboard-paint-in-kindergarten/#comments Fri, 23 Mar 2012 02:54:18 +0000 Angie http://ilovekindergarten.com/blog/?p=228 Continue reading ]]> I’ve had lots of people ask me about my small group table that I covered with chalkboard paint. It’s really working out well! I can tell it will need a touch up every once in awhile, but I’m REALLY glad I did it.

These are my kid tables. I taped off the middle, and painted them with chalkboard paint, then used paint pens to make lines for name practice. Every night I wipe them clean and the kids have to rewrite their name every morning. Lots of practice writing our names!

I’ve had lots of emails about what kind of chalkboard paint I use. This is the brand that worked best for me….the spray paint stuff did not work at all!

This is a picture of Ava showing me she understands what 9×9 means. She made 9 groups of 9, then to count it all without losing track, she uses her finger to erase each one of her tally marks. Love that CGI. My kids really do have an amazing understanding of math and numbers. Also LOVE the chalkboard paint on my table.  We use it in so many ways.

I am afraid I might have just a bit of that. I love rainbows! My good friend and coworker Lindsey makes fun of me often…she is even planning a rainbow birthday party for me. :)

Anyway, our book theme last week was “The Napping House” by Audrey and Don Wood. That books ends in a rainbow, so for our Working with Words activity this week, we made these rainbows and reviewed those color words. The best part…no waste! The cut out portion also made a rainbow when all stacked together. They took that rainbow home right away, and we displayed this one for the week.

We just finished up our Fabric Unit (Foss Kit) in Science. The kids loved the weaving project we did with our big buddies, so I added this to my Science Center. I made it with a cheap wooden frame from Walmart and some (yes, rainbow again) ribbon. Fun!
